Policing the police

Steven Manning is 54 years old and has spent the last 14 years in prison, 8 on death row. Today he's free, and a millionaire. A jury just awarded him $6.5 million because the two FBI agents who built the case against him - invented the whole thing. He claimed, and the jury were convinced, that the two FBI agents who had been using him for information, framed him when he refused to work with them further. Of course the FBI backs up their two agents, Gary Miller and Robert Buchan. This isn't the first time the FBI and other Federal law enforcement agencies have been caught creating criminals. The incentive to make oneself look good by "getting the big one" proves more than enough to justify framing innocent people, to some agents.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an excellent expose of many of these case. Do yourself a favor, and set some time aside to read the series Bill Moushey did for them. It is absolutely riveting.
