Thirty-five units and 150 firefighters were called to a 3rd-alarm fire in a four-story apartment
building in New York City after a fire was reported at 7:59 a.m. Six firefighters were searching the rear of the fourth floor for reported
trapped occupants when they themselves became trapped above the fire. They jumped from a rear window. All six were seriously injured and
rushed to various hospitals. Three did not survive. The photo is from the funeral yesterday of Firefighter John G. Bellew of Ladder Company
27 in the Bronx. As his fellow firefighters salute, his widow puts his helmet on their three year old son, Jack.
