The Scarlet Letter
From the Associated Press via World Magazine:
Mary Kay Letourneau plans to marry the former sixth-grade pupil with whom she had two children, months after her release from prison for raping him, according to an online bridal registry.
Letourneau, 43, and Vili Fualaau, 22, set a wedding date of April 16, according to their registry at a department store. Letourneau served 7 1/2 years on a 1997 conviction for raping Fualaau, who has said in the past that he hoped to wed his former teacher.
Normally I wouldn't consider this worth commenting on but I happened to catch some of the comments of World Mag's blog. Yes, she was wrong to do what she did, and deserved every day of her prison sentence -- but he's 22 now and making the decision of his own free will. What happened 10 years ago happened ten years ago. Leave 'em alone. Remember there's two little girls (their daughters) that also have to live with this perennial, media “burning-at-the-stake” whenever Letourneau surfaces in the news. Let it go for pete's sake.
