The Scarlet Letter

From the Associated Press via World Magazine:

Mary Kay Letourneau plans to marry the former sixth-grade pupil with whom she had two children, months after her release from prison for raping him, according to an online bridal registry.

Letourneau, 43, and Vili Fualaau, 22, set a wedding date of April 16, according to their registry at a department store. Letourneau served 7 1/2 years on a 1997 conviction for raping Fualaau, who has said in the past that he hoped to wed his former teacher.

Normally I wouldn't consider this worth commenting on but I happened to catch some of the comments of World Mag's blog. Yes, she was wrong to do what she did, and deserved every day of her prison sentence -- but he's 22 now and making the decision of his own free will. What happened 10 years ago happened ten years ago. Leave 'em alone. Remember there's two little girls (their daughters) that also have to live with this perennial, media “burning-at-the-stake” whenever Letourneau surfaces in the news. Let it go for pete's sake.

i honestly believe that it is an honor to God when we follow our own hearts above the constraints of society. Not to say that she should have had sex with him at such a young age, but I can't really say that she shouldn't have either. I have never met them, and have no idea what sort of man or boy he was at the time, or what sort of woman or girl she was. They found comfort and love in each other in a world where they were both floundering, and I am proud of them for having faith in that love in the face of so much controversy. They give me faith in Love and I hope to find someone someday that I would be so sure to give up everything for.
