The ebb and flow of time

Last fall the Faculty Senate at the University of Alabama passed a resolution banning school-sponsored speech that could be considered homophobic, sexist, or racist. In response, the Student Senate passed a free-speech resolution that directly counters the so-called "hate speech" resolution.
Isn't it ironic that 40 years ago it was Liberal students pushing for free speech against a Conservative academic establishment. It looks as if it's not the ideology, but the position that determines the value of freedom. Those in power have a tendency to dislike the freedoms that allow criticism of their power.
