Beth Gaddy: Michael Schiavo wannabe

From WorldNetDaily:

In a situation recalling the recent death of Terri Schiavo in Florida, an 81-year-old widow, denied nourishment and fluids for nearly two weeks, is clinging to life in a hospice in LaGrange, Ga., while her immediate family fights desperately to save her life before she dies of starvation and dehydration.

Mae Magouirk was neither terminally ill, comatose nor in a "vegetative state," when Hospice-LaGrange accepted her as a patient about two weeks ago upon the request of her granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, 36, an elementary school teacher.

Also upon Gaddy's request and without prior legal authority, since March 28 Hospice-LaGrange has denied Magouirk normal nourishment or fluids via a feeding tube through her nose or fluids via an IV. She has been kept sedated with morphine and ativan, a powerful tranquillizer.

I reported on this yesterday, as did several other bloggers. (Civilization Calls, Blogs for Terri, The Narrow, Yippee-Ki-Yay!). Since Mae Magouirk is 81 years-old there probably won't be the uproar that Terri Schiavo got. There probably will be less when they murder a 75 year-old. By the time they start murdering 60-rear-olds the attitude of “killing off the unproductive” will have lost it's unsavory feel.

Just out of curiosity -- how old do you think you'll be by that time?

Maybe I'll go rent Logan's Run this weekend. -- before it can no longer be classified as science fiction.

Have you sent this to AARP? They appeared disinterested in Terri Schiavo, but perhaps this will hit closer to home.

I spent time this afternoon on the phone with Sonja Flanagan with the DHS of Georgia. She had heard NOTHING about this case, not a word. She wanted to know why Mae Magouirk was in hospice when she is not terminally ill or vegetative. She had me send her everything I have and promised to "check it out". I don't hold out much hope, but she DOES have the power to do something. Please, PLEASE call, email her:

I also spent some time on the phone with Kenneth Mullinax and this heartbreaking - and unbelievable. I don't understand this.

This is beautiful...what you're doing. I am so horrified as to what's happening and it hasn't been very long since Terri left us. Heartbreaking, to say the least. The implications for all of us, bearing in mind history, is frightening.
