Father charges in stabbing death of two girls

From CNN:

Police have taken Jerry Hobbs into custody and charged him with murdering his 8-year-old daughter, Laura, and her best friend, 9-year-old Krystal Tobias.

The second-grade classmates are believed to have been stabbed to death Sunday on Mother's Day.

He was reported to have found the girls' bodies early Monday in a wooded park just blocks away from their elementary school, said police in Zion, about 40 miles north of Chicago.

It's way too easy to breath a sigh of release once someone's been arrested, assuming the case is over. But what we know is what the police have told the press. The guy has a criminal background, was the father of one of the girls, and apparently makes really mean faces when having his picture taken.

What we know about the police is that if they can find someone who looks kinda guilty, enough that the DA can probably convince a jury, usually consisting of former Jerry Springer audience members, they generally think their job is done, and go get some doughnuts.

Jerry Hobbs certainly looks like a bad guy, but then so does Nancy Pelosi (among others). He's prone to acts of stupidity, some of which rise to the level of violence against others, so he's certainly someone the police need to look at, but what worries me is the habit some many police departments have of ending their investigation once someone pops up that looks “sorta” guilty.

We want the monster that did this to be caught and punished, but it needs to be the actual one, not just whatever mean-looking guy happens to look maybe guiltyish enough for us to pretend he's definitely guilty.
