Susan Torres gives birth

From SusanTorresFund.org...

Happy Birthday Susan Anne Catherine Torres
AUG 03, 2005

The Torres and Rollin families are proud to announce that Mrs. Susan Torres gave birth at 8:18 am on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 to Susan Anne Catherine Torres. The baby weighs 1 pound 13 ounces and measures 13 ½ inches long.

There were no complications during delivery. The baby is doing well and is being monitored in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Virginia Hospital Center.

The Torres family will hold a press conference tomorrow, August 3, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. eastern time at Virginia Hospital Center. Further details will be available at that time.

Thank you all for your care and support which has helped both families reach this wonderful day.

From the Washington Post...

Sometime -- perhaps today or tomorrow, if it hasn't happened already -- his wife's body, full of cancer, will be unhooked from the web of machinery that has kept it going for the past 13 weeks and allowed to die, an end that Jason Torres, other relatives and a team of doctors all agreed was inevitable.

Even as the baby continued to grow during the past several months, Susan Torres's cancer -- melanoma -- grew as well, spreading to her lymph nodes, lungs, liver and other vital organs, relatives said.

As recently as last week, there was no evidence that the cancer had reached the placenta, but there were a multitude of other complications that could have forced the delivery, including infection. It was a bona fide race between life and death, one that family members decided to broadcast around the world in the hope of raising money to help with mounting medical bills.

Doctors had told Susan's husband that there was a slim chance Susan would be able to live long enough for the baby to survive. She beat the odds.

The family still owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills, which is why the Susan Torres Fund was set up.  Think about sending them some. Even $5 would be a big help since there may be thousands of other people out there who may also be thinking that what they could afford couldn't make a difference. Together it will.

UPDATE: CNN, CBS, Arlington, Va's KRON and SFGate are all reporting that Susan Torres has died after her husband aproved the removal of her life support.

I just heard on the radio that Susan has now died, having been taken off life support by her family shortly after her daughter was delivered. Baby Susan is doing well. God bless them both and the family.

Such a tragic and hopeful story at the same time. Thanks for collecting links. (And: Thanks so much for the earlier clean-up as well, Danny!)
