Catoosa’s Coach Commisky and God’s love
I was heading to the bus after a day at high school when I heard an odd noise from the gym. It sounded like basketball practice: yelling, whistling, the pounding of a basketball, the squeak of sneakers against the gym floor, but it sounded different. It wasn’t an entire team practicing.
I peaked in and there was Coach Commisky, who also taught history, shouting instructions to one lone player, who was obviously very tired and worn out. I recognized the player as the Coach’s son, Mike. While the other players were allowed to go home, goof off with their friends and enjoy the afternoon, Coach had his son stay and go through extra practice. Mike was one of the stars of the basketball team, deservedly so. I’d never realized that the Coach pushed him so hard.
Every time I face troubles, while it seems others get life handed to them on a silver platter, I remember what I saw that day. I remember that my Heavenly Father pushes me because He wants more for me, and expects more from me.
I’m His kid. Of course He’s going to be harder on me, because that’s what it takes to be a better player. If life were easy, it’d mean He didn’t expect much from me.
Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. – Galatians 4:1-7
