Tolerance, acceptance and endorsement

I have said before that Tolerance is Hatred masquerading as Endorsement. We tolerate that which we determine is bad, offensive and undesirable, but otherwise allow. Acceptance, on the other hand would mean that while we may not agree with a person on some points, we not only acknowledge their right to believe and practice it, but assist them in maintaining that freedom. But Liberals want to insist on endorsement of their own ideas, regardless how offensive other find them. Endorsement means not only to we allow it, but agree that it is correct and moral.

So the standard is that everyone must endorse what Liberals like; tolerate what they don’t like, but want to allow; and reject what they don’t like and don’t want to allow (namely Christianity). Minneapolis provides an example of this…

Beryl Dsouza was late and in no mood for delays when she stopped at a Target store after work two weeks ago for milk, bread and bacon.

So Dsouza was taken aback when the cashier — who had on the traditional headscarf, or hijab, worn by many Muslim women — refused to swipe the bacon through the checkout scanner.

“She made me scan the bacon. Then she opened the bag and made me put it in the bag,” said Dsouza, 53, of Minneapolis. “It made me wonder why this person took a job as a cashier.”

In the latest example of religious beliefs creating tension in the workplace, some Muslims in the Twin Cities are adhering to a strict interpretation of the Quran that prohibits the handling of pork products.

Instead of swiping the items themselves, they are asking non-Muslim employees or shoppers to do it for them.

So exactly how burdensome is it to scan your own bacon? There we have a clear example of the difference between merely tolerating another religion, and accepting (not endorsing) it.

While in college I worked in the snack bar. We had quite a few Moslems students at that college because many Oklahoma colleges offered petroleum engineering and other related degrees. (Oil being a common factor between Oklahoma and much of the Middle East). One day one of the Cafeteria Ladies came in to the snack bar a unceremoniously dumped several pounds of raw bacon into the hot french-fry vat. It turns out that a quick way to cook bacon, but it leave bacon grease in the oil.

“Why are you doing that?” I asked in surprise.

“We need this for a catering job, and we’re in a hurry.”

“You understand that none of the Moslem students can eat anything fried in that until the oil is replaced?”

“So, don’t tell them,” she replied as she retrieved the now cooked bacon and left.

But, I did tell them.

Their response was shock, that someone would try to trick them into eating pork, followed by amazement that a non-Moslem would go out of his way to help them follow their religion.

My motivation was that I appreciate when people are willing to accommodate my religion (Christianity) and should be willing to offer no less to others.

That’s acceptance.

I don’t endorse Islam, in fact I’ve gotten some pretty hateful comments on posts where I criticize things some Moslems have done. But when it comes to accommodating their sincerely held beliefs—exactly how burdensome is it to scan your own bacon?

Really?
